However, a quiet technological shift is now helping doctors detect potential heart issues much earlier. Smartwatches, smart rings, and home monitoring devices are becoming part of everyday life. These compact gadgets track heart rate, sleep, activity levels, and even detect irregular rhythms throughout the day.
According to Cardiologist Dr. Siddhant Jain, Director of Cardiology and Chief Interventional Cardiologist at Shalby Multispecialty Hospital, Indore, these technologies are transforming how heart health is monitored and managed.

Cardiologist Dr Siddhant Jain recalls a recent patient who visited with an unusual concern. “He told me his smartwatch had repeatedly alerted him about an irregular heartbeat during the night, even though he felt completely normal,” he explains. Further evaluation, including an ECG, revealed episodes of atrial fibrillation—a heart rhythm disorder that significantly increases the risk of stroke.
“What was remarkable,” adds Cardiologist Dr Siddhant Jain, “was that the first alert came not from a hospital check-up, but from a device on his wrist. Increasingly, patients now arrive with valuable health data already recorded over several days or weeks.”

Resting heart rate is one of the simplest indicators of cardiovascular health. Cardiologist Dr Siddhant Jain elaborates, “If a person’s resting heart rate remains elevated for several days, it may indicate infection, dehydration, poor sleep, emotional stress, or excessive physical strain.”
Heart rate variability measures the variation between heartbeats and reflects how the body responds to stress and recovery. Lower HRV may indicate fatigue or chronic stress, while higher HRV suggests better physical resilience.
Modern wearable devices can detect irregular rhythms that may suggest atrial fibrillation.
“These alerts do not replace medical testing,” says Cardiologist Dr Siddhant Jain, “but they encourage people to seek medical evaluation at an earlier stage.”

Cardiologist Dr Siddhant Jain highlights that many people judge their health primarily by body weight. However, body composition provides a more accurate picture of cardiovascular risk.
“A person may appear slim yet still have visceral fat around internal organs,” he explains. This type of fat is strongly associated with conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and coronary artery disease.
Modern smart scales can estimate body fat percentage, muscle mass, and hydration levels. Tracking these trends over time helps individuals better understand their metabolic health.

Cardiologist Dr. Siddhant Jain says, “Home monitoring helps track blood pressure more accurately and avoids the ‘white coat effect’ often seen in clinics.” Health apps also promote better habits such as staying active, hydrated, and well-rested.
However, wearable devices provide only early indicators. Clinical tests such as HbA1c, lipid profile, echocardiography, treadmill testing, and CT coronary calcium scoring remain essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
“Smartwatches and health trackers are not replacements for doctors,” says Cardiologist Dr. Siddhant Jain. “They act as early warning tools that increase awareness about personal health.”
He adds, “Think of these devices as scouts that gather information about the body. The physician’s role is to interpret that information and guide patients toward the right preventive or treatment strategy.”
